5th Grade Compositions: Your Name Is A Song5th grade students wrote original melodies based their unique names. Each student began by writing down the letters in their own name that can be found in a musical scale. They experimented, composed, notated and performed these in music class over several weeks. This project was inspired by the book "Your Name is a Song" by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow and the idea that all names are unique and important. The outline for the composition work came from fellow music educator, Gerard Stokes.
Each class took their compositions one creative step further by layering their "name songs" with others in class and arranging them in a final performance that we recorded to share here. Since you can't see their notation, each child's name is in the title of their group piece. |
