The Lunar New Year is upon us! Happy Year of the Tiger. Our second graders have been comparing traditional Eastern and Western Orchestras through listening to recordings and watching performances. They were interested to see that orchestras of all kinds have similar families of instruments like Strings, Percussion, Woodwinds and Brass. However, the instruments in each are unique to each culture. The Hong Kong Orchestra performance shown here was mesmerizing to them. Students learned about traditions associated with the Lunar New Year and created the dragon masks seen in these photos. They were particularly excited to learn more about Lion Dancing and how the dancers inside the costume must work together and train.
